Bretti Reserve - Dingo Tops

Bretti Nature Reserve is about 44km NNW of Gloucester on Thunderbolts Way. It is a pleasant grassy campsite on the banks of the Barnard River. It can become very crowded during school holidays. BYO drinking water and firewood. Thunderbolts Way is sealed and the drive is pleasant to Gloucester. Take the road towards Taree for 4.5km, then turn left towards Bundook (25km). It is sealed for the first 20km. Turn left onto Callaghans Creek Road to Mt George, crossing the Gloucester River on a very high bridge. After about 9.5km turn right onto Tin Road. A little further on, turn right onto Nowendoc Road towards Wingham, then after about 6km turn left onto Knodingbul Road.

The drive to this point is easy and on good roads through undulating rural scenery. From here though, the road rises steeply through Forestry land. The road is the main Forestry track is generally well maintained, though it is steep with sharp turns and blind corners. It is basically clay-based and, being steep, can become very slippery after rain. Add heavily laden timber trucks to the mix and 'care' becomes the by-word! The road is posted every 2km with highly visible posts giving the km distance along the road. This could be a life-saver in the event of an accident (UHF24 Traffic).

This drive is some 33km from the Knodingbul Rd. turnoff and brings you to Dingo Tops Forest Park (31.66600S 152.14295E at 884m elevation. The camping area is very well set up (beware - leeches), with shelters, camp kitchen with gas bbq, and toilets. You will need to BYO drinking water. It can be a little confusing as to where to camp as the camping area is 'bollarded' off. One needs to park roadside and set up camp on the other side of the bollards. At time of writing a $5/person/night fee applies. There are a couple of short, but worthwhile forest walks to be done.
