Lavel Post Bay/Muloorina PAR / Lake Eyre
About the Track
Track Description

The Level Post Bay Track / Muloorina Station Public Access Road (PAR) is one of the two main access roads to Lake Eyre.

Access is about 1 km North of Marree.  Follow the Oodnadata Track along beside the old Ghan rail embankment until you reach the trestle bridge and turn right.  You will need plenty of water and fuel.  There are 3 gates along the Muloorina Station road you may need to open and close. One is the dog fence. There are also a number of cattle Grids.

There is a campground  about 40 kms at Muloorina Waterhole which is excellent with flush toilets and a bore water tank.  Excellent camong next to the Muloorina Waterhole (about 50 cm deep but about a km or so long).  Currently a $8 donation per vehicle per night in an honesty box which is donated to the RFDS.

Follow the sign from Muloorina Waterhole toward Lake Eyre National Park though you will reach Lake Eyre South after about 20kms.  The road is not bad until you get to the National Park and then it become a bit more of a track.  There is one easy sandhill to cross.  It is about 40 kms or so from the Muloorina Waterhole to the carpark at Lake Eyre.  It is then another 150 metres from the carpark to Lake Eyre.  It is on foot since no vehicles are allowed on Lake Eyre - so on foot or on a bicycle.

It is from here that Donald Campbell set the Land Speed Record on 17 July 1965 and a very impressive place to visit.  Only filled to date 3 times in the past 150 years.  It may also fill this year 2010.  For the most part it is a dry salt lake which is partly below sea level.  1/6th of the Australian continent drains into Lake Eyre.

The track can be closed at times - some parts are quite corrogated so it will test your vehicle.  For road conditions through South Australia check the transport SA website http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/quicklinks/northern_roads/area1.asp
