Root Hog Fire Trail
About the Track
Track Description

Ok firstly it has to be said that this is not a trip for ‘softroaders’ as there is a bit of a requirement for ground clearance and a crossing of the Macquarie River with water that may well be a bit of an issue for vehicles with a lower mounted engine. The photos associated with this trip report should give you a reasonable idea of the road conditions and water depth. This river crossing also means that it might be a good idea to reschedule this one following periods of rain as the river may well be up and running to much to safely cross. Of course there is always the option of turning around and heading back if you don’t feel confident of your ability to cross the river in it’s current state.

The drive out to Cowan, not the one just north of Sydney, from Kelso is mainly bitumen but from there on its easy dirt a lot of which runs along a ridge line with views across the surrounding hills with enough space if you want to pull over for a cuppa. Towards the end of this section, the second last waypoint, the road takes a turn right and becomes less well maintained with some large rocks and washouts.

When you get to the bottom of the hill and arrive at the river crossing you are presented with camping options on either side of the river with the western side, before you cross, offering the least amount of use. Turning left onto the Bridal Track will take you past additional camping areas with the one North of the Turon Rivercrossing having some facilities.
